Rodrigo Barriga

Cuarteto

For open instrumentation

Quartet, for open instrumentation, is a guided improvisation piece which functions on the balance between performer agency and interaction. The score grants participants freedom as much as it conditions their individual actions to those of other players. Participants must listen carefully and be ready to act on cue at all times, or they may choose to remain silent, leaving space for others to be heard and lead at different times. The music is a result of the relationships between sounds which, emerging as individual ideas, are contextualized in a group setting and therefore developed collectively.
